Like past years, there will be a special Schoenling bock beer tapping. Every year, the Bloatarian Brewing League holds the Bockfest Homebrew Competition during Bockfest. The winner of the professionally judged competition sees his or her bock recipe professionally brewed as the Schoenling
Bock the following year. Schoenling Bock will only be available at the tapping and Bockfest venues during Bockfest. Join in the tapping of this Bockfest original, as well as sample this year's Hudepohl Festival Bock. Admission is free, with Happy Hour beer prices on the bock beers and a delicious German buffet available for $11. Festivities will take place in the rear Bavarian Banquet Haus. No reservations will be accepted for the buffet or the tapping, but they are recommended if you want to order off the menu in the main restaurant: (513) 221-5353

Mecklenburg Gardens is Cincinnati's oldest restaurant and an important piece of our German-American history. In early Cincinnati, the population was contained to the basin, the areas on the flat lands surrounded by the city's steep hills. The city grew quickly in the mid-1800s and became very congested, smoky, and generally unpleasant. As roads started to improve in the 1860s and the incline planes started to open in the 1870s, many of the inhabitants of the basin that could afford the move made the choice to move to the fresh air of the hilltops. This included many of the more affluent German-Americans in Over-the-Rhine who moved in concentrated numbers to places like Corryville. Where there were Germans, there needed to be beer. People like the Mecklenburg family filled this need by founding Mecklenburg Gardens in 1865. At the time, the restaurant and its renowned beer garden would have been largely in a pastoral, suburban setting. The surroundings have changed, but Mecklenburg Gardens has remained largely the same.
